Guidelines
- Use controlled vocabulary (see link below)
- Use your internal controlled vocabulary (own language)
- Use verbatim
Controlled vocabulary
- Use this controlled vocabulary: use the "Online Browsing Platform" at http://www.iso.org/iso/home/standards/country_codes.htm
Always enter the country name spelled out using the "short name" as listed in ISO 3166, leaving the article out. For example enter "Germany" and not "the Federal Republic of Germany".
Usage examples
Note: If the country is recorded on the label as abbreviated name, spell it out. Use the "short name" as indicated in ISO 3166. If the country is recorded in a foreign language, translate into English using the country list as in the ISO codes in ISO 3166. If the country name cannot be translated or if there is no English equivalent, leave the "country" field blank, but make sure to enter the original verbatim data in the verbatimLocality field. This is also true for names of countries (or parts of countries) that no longer exist. ??? However, if a country was formerly split, and is now unified again, enter the unified country name, but make sure to record the verbatim data in the verbatimLocality field (see the example for Eastern Germany below)???
