Guidelines
- Use controlled vocabulary (see link below)
- Use your internal controlled vocabulary (own language)
- Use verbatim
Controlled vocabulary
- Use this controlled vocabulary: use the "Online Browsing Platform" of the ISO country codes (ISO 3166) for higher level subdivisions (i.e. state, province, territory or canton in some countries) at: http://www.iso.org/iso/home/standards/country_codes.htm
For smaller subdivisions (i.e. canton, department, region, etc.) use the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic names at: http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/tgn/index.html
Usage examples
Note: If the region is recorded on the label as abbreviated name, spell it out. If the region is recorded in a foreign language, translate into English using the "subdivision name" as shown in the ISO codes in ISO 3166 or the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic names. If the region name cannot be translated or if there is no English equivalent, leave the "stateProvince" field blank, but make sure to enter the original verbatim data in the verbatimLocality field. [KCP comment- the following could be added: "This is also true in the case where the label refers to a term that could be either a region, a city or a geomorphologic unit (i.e. river, mountains). See the example below for the case of "Loire" in France which is a river and a region, or "Salamanca" in Spain which is both a region and a city."]
